Bo Nix and the Broncos offense started with the ball at their own 22 yard line. After a couple of short runs by JK Dobbins, the Broncos were facing a 3rd and 7. Bo Nix found Troy Franklin on the right side and he cut it up field for a first down but had the ball punched out and the Jets got their first takeaway of the season, giving their offense an early gift of starting field position at the Denver 37 yard line.
The Jets offense struggled to move the ball against this talented defense. JFM got a sack on second down and Justin Fields was only able to gain 6 yards on a scramble on 3rd down. Nick Folk converted a 52 yard field goal to give the Jets an early 3-0 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the 1st quarter.
The Broncos offense gained their first 1st down of the drive on a slant to Pat Bryant as Denver worked into Jets territory. A false start and a TFL hurt the drive and facing a 3rd and 14, Bo Nix hit RJ Harvey for a 9 yard gain. Wil Lutz was able to convert a 57 yard field goal to tie the game with 7:03 remaining in the 1st quarter.
Kene Nwangwu had a 72 yard kickoff return to set the Jets up at the Denver 24 yard line for their next drive but the Broncos defense, once again, did their job forcing a 3 and out. Nick Folk chipped in a 41 yard field goal and the Jets went back in front 6-3 with 4:55 remaining in the 1st quarter.
Courtland Sutton caught the first pass of the drive for 17 yards and got the Broncos near midfield but a Matt Peart holding call on another Sutton catch backed the ball up. On 3rd and 16, Bo Nix scrambled for 11 yards making it a 4th and 5. Nix hit Evan Engram on the right side and the starting TE turned it upfield for an 11 yard gain and a 1st down. Engram caught another pass to get it down to the Jets 16 yard line and on the very next play, Bo finds Nate Adkins wide open down the right side for a 16 yard touchdown! Broncos go in front 10-6 at the end of the 1st quarter.
New York started their 3rd drive of the game in their own territory for the 1st time today but the result was the same...a quick 3 and out. This time, Jets were punting instead of attempting a field goal, the Denver offense went back to work from their own 21 yard line with 13:24 remaining in the 2nd quarter.
Bo Nix took a deep shot to Marvin Mims on 1st down and though there was contact the ball fell incomplete and there was no flag. Evan Engram went to work on a jet sweep for 7 yards and then a 4 yard catch to get the initial first down of the drive. Facing a 3rd a 2 from their own 40, Bo Nix scrambled for 6 yards to get the 1st down. A couple plays later on 3rd and 5, JK Dobbins dropped a screen and Denver was forced to punt. New York would start on offense from their 20 yard line after a touchback with 9:18 remaining before half.
The Jets hadn't had a first down yet and they weren't going to get it on this drive as Eyioma Uwazerike and Jonathon Cooper sacked Fields on 2nd and 3rd down and New York punted it back to Denver who started their next drive, who started from their own 41 yard line with 7:45 remaining in the 1st half.
Bo Nix hit Troy Franklin on the first play of the drive to get things going and JK Dobbins gained 6 on the next play to get the Broncos an initial first down. Troy Franklin had brilliant 24 catch and run but a Matt Peart holding call (his 2nd of the day) wiped it out. A screen on 3rd and forever didn't get the necessary line to gain and the Broncos were forced to punt it back to New York, who started their next drive from their 16 yard line with 3:22 remaining in the 1st half.
Facing a 3rd and 6, Josh Reynolds caught an 8 yard pass for the first 1st down of the game for New York at the 2 minute warning. Breece Hall gained 4 on the next play and Garrett Wilson caught a 2 yard pass to set up another 3rd down in the waning minutes of the 1st half. Jets couldn't convert the 3rd down but somehow converted a fake punt on 4th and 1 (even though it looked like it was short). Weird drive because after being aggressive for the 1st down, Aaron Glenn went back to running it and eventually ran out the clock on the next 4th and 1 from the Jets 41 yard line. Jets had 32 total yards of offense to the Broncos 175.
New York started with the ball on offense in the 3rd quarter from their own 43 yard line after another nice kickoff return. Breece Hall gained the initial first down of the drive after a Fields scramble and the Jets were quickly into Denver territory. Josh Reynolds caught a 12 yard pass and then Fields scrambled to the 25 and the Jets moved deeper into Denver territory. The drive stalled and Nick Folk converted a 38 yard field goal to pull the Jets within 1, 10-9 with 10:25 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
The Broncos offense needed to respond but instead went 3 and out with a brutal drop by Jaleel McLaughlin, getting his first snaps of the season. Jets returned the punt back to their own 42 yard line with 8:48 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
The Jets quickly got into Denver territory on the ground game with Breece Hall. A nice TFL by Singleton lead to a clutch pass breakup by Pat Surtain on 3rd down and the Jets were forced to punt. A tremendous special teams coverage play by the Jets downed the ball at the Broncos 3 yard line.
On 1st down, Quinn Meinerz was called for holding on an incomplete pass out of the end zone and the Jets get a Safety and retake the lead 11-10 with 4:56 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
Jets started their next drive from their own 36 yard line after the free kick but didn't get a first down, going quickly 3 and out after a Talanoa Hufanga sack. New York punted it to Denver and they started their next drive from their 18.
Facing a 3rd and 10, the Broncos opted to run the ball with Adam Prentice for 3 yards and punt the ball back to New York...
The Broncos defense nearly came up with a fumble by Garrett Wilson but upon review they ruled it an incomplete pass (which was curious). Justin Strnad came up with a sack on 3rd down and got the ball back to the offense as we began the 4th quarter at their own 26 yard line.
Looking to get some momentum back but not finding it on offense, the Broncos offense quickly went 3 and out...a holding call on the Jets during the PR backed them up to their own 10 yard line with an 11-10 lead and 13:31 remaining in the game.
Breece Hall gained an initial first down but the drive stalled at their own 30. It appeared like New York might go for it on 4th and 1 but after a timeout, punted it back to the Broncos who would take over at their 26 yard line with 10:16 remaining in the game.
The Broncos offense FINALLY got going in the 2nd half with a 12 yard completion to Engram to get the initial first down and then Marvin Mims took a wheel route 26 yards down the left sideline. JK Dobbins gained some on the ground as the Broncos got into a goal to go situation. On 3rd and goal from the 9, Nix pass to Sutton fell incomplete and the Broncos settled for a 27 yard field goal to retake the lead 13-11 with 5:06 remaining in the game.
The Broncos offense trying to close the game with the ball unfortunately went 3 and out. Jets got the ball back, only trailing by 2, and with a couple of Breece Hall carries got into Denver territory after the 2 minute warning. The Broncos defense came up HUGE with back to back sacks on 3rd and eventually 4th down and Denver escaped with a 13-11 win to improve to 4-2!
The next broadcast will be on Sunday, October 19th as the Denver Broncos host the New York Giants at Empower Field at Mile High. Coverage starts at 8am.
