An off-duty Massachusetts police officer, Kelsey Fitzsimmons, was shot by a fellow officer during a confrontation at her home in North Andover on Monday (June 30). The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. when officers attempted to serve Fitzsimmons with a restraining order. According to Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker, the confrontation led to one officer discharging their firearm, striking Fitzsimmons once. She was immediately given medical care and flown to a Boston-area hospital, where she is in stable condition.

The restraining order was filed by Fitzsimmons' fiancé, who expressed concerns for his safety and that of their son, fearing she might harm the baby. Fitzsimmons had been diagnosed with postpartum depression earlier in 2025 and was temporarily relieved of her police firearm, which was later reinstated when she returned to duty in June.

The Essex County District Attorney's Office and the Massachusetts State Police are investigating the incident. The North Andover police department does not use body cameras, and all officers involved are being interviewed as part of the investigation. Fitzsimmons has been with the department for about a year and a half.
