President Donald Trump's "big, beautiful" agenda bill was passed by the House of Representatives by a one-vote margin Thursday (May 22) morning and will now be sent to the Senate, NBC News reports.
The multitrillion-dollar spending measure was approved by a 215-214 vote, however, is expected to see more drama in the 48-hour Senate process, with Republicans demanding additional spending cuts and the preservation of current Medicaid rules.
Two Republicans -- Rep. Warren Davidson of Ohio and Rep. Warren Davidson of Ohio -- voted with the 212 Democrats to oppose the measure while Rep. Andy Harris of Maryland, who leads the conservative House Freedom Caucus, voted "present."
The bill extends Trump's 2017 tax cuts and will put money into the expansion of the military and mass deportation plans, while also eliminating taxes on tips and overtime work, a key promise made by the president during his campaign. The measure also slashes spending in several other areas including cuts to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), while rescinding clean energy tax credits previously passed by the Democrats in 2022, which are expected to raise the debt ceiling by $4 trillion.
"What we're going to do here this morning is truly historic, and it will make all the difference in the daily lives of hard working Americans. ... To put it simply, this bill gets Americans back to winning again, and it's been a long time coming," said House Speaker Mike Johnson during a floor speech before the vote via NBC News.
