GOP Officially Renominates Donald Trump And Mike Pence To Headline Ticket

The Republican party has formally nominated Donald Trump and Mike Pence to headline their 2020 presidential ticket as they seek a second term. President Trump took the stage in Charlotte, North Carolina, to chants of "four more years" on the first day of the Republican National Convention. He told the delegates the upcoming election is "most important election in the history of our country."

"Our country can go in a horrible, horrible direction or an even greater direction and before the plague came in from China, that's where we were going," Trump said.

Trump said that the country was moving in the right direction before the coronavirus pandemic.

"We're getting ready to do things like nobody has ever seen before, but the best way to bring unity is success," Trump said. "Success brings unity, and we were there, and then we got hit with the plague, and we won't forget that."

Vice President Mike Pence thanked the delegates and touted the progress made during Trump's first term.

"We've revived this economy through cutting taxes ... after years of budget cuts, this president rebuilt our military," Pence said. "This president has seen with your support more than 200 men and women confirmed to the federal courts at every level and they are all conservatives who will uphold the God-given liberties enshrined in our Constitution like the freedom of religion, the freedom of speech and the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms."

Pence also took a shot at Joe Biden and the Democratic Party, accusing them of being "overtaken by the radical left."

Trump ran virtually unopposed in the Republican primaries. He won all but one delegate, which went to former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld. Trump is the first president to be impeached but still receive the nomination for a second term.

The convention will continue at 8:30 p.m. ET on Monday night with speeches from Nikki Haley, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, Mark and Patricia McCloskey, Donald Trump Jr. and many others.
