Florida Couple Arrested For Breaking Quarantine After COVID-19 Diagnosis

A Florida couple was arrested for allegedly breaking a mandatory quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19. On July 14, Jose Antonio Freire Interian, 24, posted on Facebook that he had contracted the coronavirus and told his friends to get tested if they had seen him in the past week.

Health officials ordered Interian and his girlfriend, Yohana Anahi Gonzalez, 27, to quarantine in their Key West apartment until July 31.

Instead of following the quarantine order, they acted like nothing was wrong. Neighbors reported that the couple left their apartment without a mask on numerous occasions to go shopping. The property manager gave police security camera footage, which showed them hanging out in a common area of the building.

That footage was shown to a judge who signed a warrant for their arrest. Interian and Gonzalez were taken into custody and into special "negative rooms" in the Stock Island Detention Center. Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokesman Adam Linhardt told the Miami Herald that the air in the rooms is not recirculated to other areas of the jail, and the couple remained isolated from other prisoners before they were released on bail.

Interian and Gonzalez were each charged with violating the state law that requires isolation or quarantine in a public health emergency and violating emergency management. If convicted of both charges, they each face up to 120 days in jail.
