Girls and Science

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science and CBS4, KCNC-TV, will host the fifth annual Girls & Science, a one-day event on March 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, 2001 Colorado Blvd. All ages are welcome. Activities will be oriented to children ages 8 to 13.

The event will feature eight Science Clubhouses hosted by Career Mentors working in STEAM fields (science, technology, engineering, arts and math), along with many professionals participating in Stories with Scientists and small-group mentor meetups. Using activities and conversations, Career Mentors will share their personal experiences and encourage girls and their families to try careers on, test them out and play.

“I’m so excited to be part of this event,” said Amber Menzies, building operations manager at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and a Career Mentor. “There are so many ways to connect to science and inspire people to follow their curiosity. I can’t wait to share the work my team and I do at the Museum, meet the other Career Mentors and watch those sparks of excitement ignite!”

“Girls & Science has grown into such a great event over the past five years and I am honored to be part of encouraging the next generation of scientists,” CBS4 Meteorologist Lauren Whitney said. “The students who visit my clubhouse are interested in a variety of STEAM careers including meteorology and it’s so fulfilling to help motivate girls to pursue their dreams.”

According to a 2018 report from the National Science Foundation, only 29 percent of science and engineering jobs are held by women. The Museum and CBS4, KCNC-TV, host this event to inspire students to pursue their interests in STEAM and increase participation and parity among women and other underrepresented groups in these careers.

Because girls and all students are inspired to pursue STEAM topics when adults and peers believe in them and encourage them, Girls & Science is an event designed for families, friends, teachers, mentors and extended social groups to experience together.

Limited parking is available for free at the Museum; please consider using alternative transportation.

Organized youth groups receive free admission with advance reservations at 303-370-6000. For general information about the event, the Clubhouse hosts, and discounts and scholarships, visit dmns.org/girlsandscience.

Girls & Science is presented by Risas Dental & Braces with support from Anadarko, Bank of America, Ping Identity, Raytheon and Xcel Energy. Telemundo Denver is the Spanish-language television sponsor.
